Silver Spring Apartment Building Explodes, "Multiple Casualties" Reported

A Silver Spring apartment building "exploded" Thursday morning, leading to what is being described as "multiple casualties" and injuries from the explosion and subsequent fires and structural collapse.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the 2400 block of Lyttonsville Road at approximately 10:30 am as fires were seen and a section of the building that appeared to be completely destroyed.

Firefighters were seen using cherry pickers to extract people from the building and medic could be seen wheeling people on stretchers.

It's unclear what caused the explosion, but one resident reportedly told NBC Washington they noticed a strong smell of gas as they left the building hours before the incident.
