In a not surprising move, the Washington Football Team has announced that fans have been banned from wearing Native American headdresses and face paint at FedExField.
The team released a statement via email to the team's fans on Wednesday, explaining that the attire was no longer allowed at home games.
Among the announcements regarding the upcoming 2021 season, the email reads, "Approved Fan Attire: We are excited to welcome everyone back wearing their Burgundy & Gold. However, Native American inspired ceremonial headdresses or face paint may no longer be worn into the stadium."
The move comes as the team continues to distance themselves from their previous name. They also recently ruled out renaming the team to the "Warriors" or any name bearing resemblance to Native Americans.
"We will chose an identity that unequivocally departs from any use of or approximate linkage to Native American imagery," said WFT President Jason Wright last month.
A new team name is expected before the 2022 season.
