150 low-income families in Alexandria, Virginia may soon receive $500 a month for the next two years as part of a pilot test of guaranteed basic income.

The program, funded by the American Rescue Plan (ARPA) has $59M in funding, and $3M of that will be allocated to Alexandria. Some of that money would be distributed to the families via pre-paid debit cards.

The city says 30 projects will be implemented with the money in hopes of helping businesses and families thrive. The City says a research partner will monitor the program and determine the success of the projects and guaranteed basic income pilot program.

At the time of this writing, it is not yet clear how the 150 families will be chosen, or how they could possibly apply to be part of the program.
