Mosquitos with West Nile Virus Found in Prince George's County: Officials

The Maryland Department of Agriculture and Maryland health officials say that the West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitos in Prince George's County.

The virus was detected in the mosquitos in the areas of Bladensburg, Bowie North, Capitol Heights, Greenvale, Landover, Landover Hills, Seat Pleasant and Woodlawn.

On Tuesday, the state's Department of Agriculture began spraying via trucks in attempt to quell the adult mosquito population in three locations.

The MDA is urging residents to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of exposure to mosquito bites.

The CDC says West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the contiguous U.S. No vaccines exist for the virus, and most people who get the disease do not feel sick. About 1-in-5 who are infected develop symptoms and about 1-in-150 people develop a serious and sometimes fatal illness as a result of the virus, say the CDC.
