Curfews in DC Lift After 5th Night of Protests

Protesters Demonstrate In D.C. Against Death Of George Floyd By Police Officer In Minneapolis

WASHINGTON, DC -- Curfews lift in the District after a night of peaceful protests. Daily protests continue across the country more than a week after George Floyd died in Minneapolis police custody.

Floyd's death triggered protests in Minneapolis, which soon spread to countless other communities. Some of the protests have been sidetracked by looting and violence. In New York City, about 280 people were arrested overnight as protests turned unruly despite a curfew being in place.

A new poll finds most Americans sympathize with the nationwide protests and disapprove of President Trump's response. The Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 64-percent of American adults were "sympathetic to people who are out protesting right now," while only 27-percent said they were not.More than 55-percent of those polled said they disapprove of Trump's handling of the protests, including 40-percent who "strongly" disapproved, while only one-third approved.

Last night, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam addressed the protesting and violence in the state. The Governor said that he stands with Virginians and he encourages folks to protest peacefully.

He said he chose not to send the Virginia National Guard to Washington, D.C. because Mayor Muriel Bowser didn't request it and he didn't want to deploy the guard for a "photo op."

Northam was joined by several other local leaders including Shirley Ginwright with the Virginia American Advisory Board and a high school student that both said the police brutality needs to stop.

The Governor said Virginia will host virtual town halls and a day of prayer to help healing.
