U.S. finalizing agreements with Honduras, stem flow of illegal immigration

WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. is finalizing agreements with Honduras that aim to stem the flow of illegal immigration.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf met with officials in the Central American country last week. The agreements are also geared toward fighting transnational criminal organizations in the region.

The department notes that the recent initiatives have been working.December was the seventh straight month of declines in enforcement actions at America's southwest border, encountering less than 41,000 illegal immigrants.

Meanwhile, enforcement actions at the southwest border are down for the seventh consecutive month.Customs and Border Protection announced enforcement actions declined by five percent in December.

Encounters have gone down a total of 72 percent since what the department calls the "peak of the humanitarian and border security crisis" last May.The agency says they continue to seize more drugs, as well.

More than 93,000 pounds of drugs were intercepted nationwide last month, a five percent increase compared to November.
