WASHINGTON, DC — The Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) are being tapped to replace the aging Cape Cod Canal bridges.

Massachusetts Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren along with Congressman Bill Keating are calling for new Cape Cod Canal bridges.

“The Army Corps of Engineers’ recommendation to replace the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges over the Cape Cod Canal is good news for the Cape and Islands, and for communities all across the Commonwealth,” said Senator Warren said in a statement. “Updating our transportation infrastructure will help us grow our economy while enhancing our public safety, and I’m committed to seeing this important project move forward.”

The bridges connect nearly 250,000 residents on the Cape and Islands to the rest of Massachusetts. The bridges are eighty years-old and according to the USACE’s recent report, structurally deficient and in desperate need of replacement.

In a letter to top officials at the Army Corp of Engineers, they ask for adoption of the recommendation from the Corps' New England District to replace the aging Bourne and Sagamore bridges.

The recommended plan is contained in a report that was released in October.
