Workers Credited for Reduced Wait Times at California DMV

SACRAMENTO, CA — DMV delays are about half as long as they were a year ago, thanks in part to DMV employees.

Wait times now average 38 minutes, down from 73 last year. That's according to new data from the California Department of Motor Vehicles and examined by the Sacramento Bee.

The agency credits both increased staffing and seasonal shifts in customer volume.But the DMV warns wait times could increase again next year as the October deadline approaches to obtain a Real ID to get through airport security.

Beginning on October 1st, 2020, every air traveler over the age of 18 will need a Real ID driver's license to fly within the United States.

Acting Deputy Administrator for the TSA Patricia Cogswell said they are strongly urging travelers to take action as soon as possible to ensure they are ready and have the proper documentation.

Cogswell says the goal of the program is to improve aviation security by increasing the vetting process to obtain a Real ID. CEO of the U.S. Travel Association Roger Dow says the biggest challenge has been implementing the Real ID standards across each state.

TSA and DMV officials say they must maintain a steady drum beat to get Americans ready for Real ID.
