BART Elevator Attendant Program Expands To Two New Stations

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — You could start seeing more elevator attendants in public transit systems nationwide.

A pilot program in San Francisco that placed attendants in two Bay Area Regional Transit (BART) station elevators is proving to be so successful, the transit agency has expanded it to two more stations.

BART officials say the program was established after they received a number of complaints about drug use or graffiti in the elevators.

A San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency release decided to extend the program because, “ Data collected along with customer feedback since then has been overwhelmingly positive.”

They say data found that unwanted activities in elevators have dropped to virtually zero in stations with attendants.

“This program is amazing on so many levels,” said Paula Fraser, Assistant Chief Transportation Officer for BART’s downtown San Francisco lines. “These workers are from the community, they’re helping our patrons, and they’re improving the quality of life in our stations, which benefits everyone.”
