Three Soldiers Die In Training Accident At Fort Stewart

FORT STEWART, GA -- Three U.S. soldiers are dead in a tragic accident at Fort Stewart.

Army officials say soldiers from the First Armored Brigade Combat team were riding in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle that overturned into water during a planned training exercise early last week.Two of three other soldiers who were injured have since been released from the hospital.

The Third Infantry Division's commanding general called it heartbreaking and devastating.

The accident is under investigation by the 3rd Infantry Division and a team from the US Army Combat Readiness Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

The 27-ton armored Bradley Fighting Vehicle is a designed to carry six soldiers, three crew members, a 25 mm cannon, a TOW missile system and a machine gun mounted to the cannon.

Fort Stewart is just off the Georgia coast, southwest of Savannah, and is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River. The 3rd Infantry Division, one of the US Army's mechanized infantry divisions, is the base's largest unit.
