The National 9-11 Pentagon Memorial is getting an update.
The National 9-11 Pentagon Memorial will close beginning Sept. 16, 2019, for lighting repairs and construction and will remain closed until construction is completed in late May 2020.
The reason for the closure is the lighting systems in the pools under the memorial benches that keep seeping water into the fixtures. The plan is to replace the entire electrical system at the Memorial and should wrap up around May of next year.
The closures will happen in two phases: first the memorial bench area will close the weekend, then the memorial gateway entrance, which will close November 16th this year. Both should reopen next May.
The Pentagon Chapel, including the 9-11 memorial inside the chapel, will not be affected by this project.
Every effort has been made to develop a construction plan that will enable the work to be completed in a quick and efficient manner, reducing site closure time in order to minimize the impact on family members and visitors to the Memorial.
