YouTube will have to pay 170-million-dollars to settle claims it violated child privacy laws.
The Federal Trade Commission and the New York attorney general claim YouTube earned millions by illegally collecting personal information from children without their parents' consent, which they say is a violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
The settlement requires Google and YouTube to pay 136-million to the FTC and 34-million to New York.It also requires the tech giant to develop practices to comply with the law.
The FTC penalty is the largest ever paid in a COPPA case since Congress enacted the law in 1998.
