A Washingtonian who formerly worked at the State Department and sold internal documents to China has been sentenced to over 3 years in prison for her actions.
Candace Marie Claiborne was given 40 months in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $40,000 for conspiracy to defraud the U.S., the Justice Department.
Claiborne, of Washington, D.C., received cash, gifts, travel and vacations, and an apartment in exchange for internal State Department documents on topics ranging from economics to visits by dignitaries between China and the U.S.
Claiborne’s career at the agency began in 1999, as an office management specialist. She served overseas at various posts, including embassies and consulates in Baghdad, Iraq, Khartoum, Sudan, and Beijing and Shanghai, China.
Claiborne pleaded guilty in April 2019 to a charge of conspiracy to defraud the U.S.
