Oct. 1 Slated for DOD to Assume Security Clearance Duties

The Pentagon now has a better idea for when it’s officially assuming the security clearance responsibilities from the Office of Personnel Management.

In an announcement, the Defense Department said all security clearance investigations will be done by the newly created Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency by Oct. 1.

OPM’s National Background Investigations Bureau was originally tasked with that duty, but language in the fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act directed those responsibilities to be transferred to the Pentagon.

“As part of that changeover, National Background Investigations Bureau employees will become DOD employees, though they will remain working in the same location, and in almost every case, continue under their current chains of command,” according to the announcement.
