A newly formed partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs and another federal agency focused on volunteering and service efforts intends to support older veterans and their caregivers.
The collaboration with the Corporation for National and Community Service to engage Senior Corps volunteers “will help improve Veterans’ health and well-being and will aid their families and caregivers through in-home assistance,” VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said in a statement.
Senior Corps volunteers are age 55 or older who dedicate their time to various community needs. These volunteers to provide homemaker and in-home respite care services to eligible veterans, so those veterans can remain in their own homes, live more independently and stay close to their families, caregivers and support services.
The partnership entails CNCS providing volunteer support services in Colorado Springs, Colorado; Las Vegas, Nevada; Missoula, Montana; Pittsburgh; and San Antonio, Texas. Before beginning their service, the volunteers get trained on veteran-specific concerns such as suicide awareness and prevention.
