The National Nuclear Security Administration is providing a $5 million investment to build the future workforce at one of its nuclear reservations in South Carolina.
NNSA will provide a new contribution of $1 million annually for five years through a local nonprofit that supports programs at five post-secondary education institutions in the region around Savannah River Site.
During a June 17 event at Aiken Technical College, NNSA Administrator Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty said employees at Savannah River Site played a part in protecting the nation for nearly seven decades, and the schools in the area have been key in preparing that workforce.
“As many of you know, our mission at Savannah River Site will be growing – not decreasing,” she said. “We will continue to rely on you to train the workforce for the future. The Department of Energy and NNSA are committed to this partnership and helping sustain the great work being done.”
The investment represents a 100% increase in the funding for the Workforce Opportunities in Regional Careers program. WORC partners with Aiken Technical College, Augusta Technical College, and University of South Carolina.
WORC funds support students training for industrial, electrical, mechanical, chemical, welding and computer technology; radiation protection technology and nuclear engineering technology; process engineering and computer science; environmental remediation and restoration research; and chemistry and physics with a concentration in Nuclear Science
