NSA Creates New Cyber Unit

US-CRIME-INTELLIGENCE

The nation’s top spy agency is merging its intelligence and cyber defense activities and creating a new entity focused on preventing and eliminating threats to national security systems and the defense industrial base.

The National Security Agency’s new cybersecurity directorate will be headed by Anne Neuberger, director of cybersecurity who reports to NSA Director Gen. Paul Nakasone, according to a July 23 announcement. Neuberger has served as NSA’s first chief risk officer, deputy director of operations, and lead of NSA’s Russia Small Group.

“The Cybersecurity Directorate will reinvigorate our white hat mission opening the door to partners and customers on a wide variety of cybersecurity efforts,” according to the announcement. “It will also build on our past successes such as Russia Small Group to operationalize our threat intelligence, vulnerability assessments, and cyber defense expertise to defeat our adversaries in cyberspace.

The new entity will be operational Oct. 1.
