DOE to Explore AI that Can Secure Power Grid

The Energy Department is funding research and development in artificial intelligence and machine learning in an effort to discover new approaches and tools for U.S. critical energy infrastructure.

DOE’s Office of Electricity has chosen eight projects that will get nearly $7 million in total to study how big data, AI and machine learning can bolster the resiliency of the power grid. DOE’s Office of Science also plans to give $13 million in total funding for new research aimed at improving AI as a tool of scientific investigation and prediction.

The AI in Grid Resiliency projects aim to shape the future development and application of faster grid analytics and modeling, better grid asset management, and sub-second automatic control actions. The AI in Science projects will focus on developing new AI algorithms and software adapted to specific scientific problems.

National laboratories, universities, industry and nonprofit organizations can apply. Awards will be selected competitively by peer review.
