DOE to Award $100M to Help Build Green Coal Plants

The Energy Department has announced $100 million in investments for an initiative that aims to develop coal plants of the future.

This fall, DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy is slated to release a funding opportunity announcement that will award nearly $100 million for R&D projects that will help develop safer, reliable coal plants with near-zero emissions.

Under the Coal FIRST, these next-generation plants will be smaller than today’s plants and will use innovative components to boost efficiency, DOE said. They would also transform how coal power plant technologies are designed and manufactured.

“The Coal FIRST initiative will integrate early-stage R&D on power plant components with currently available technologies into a first-of-a-kind system,” said Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy Steven Winberg. “Through innovative technologies and advanced approaches to design and manufacturing, the initiative will look beyond today’s utility-scale power plant concepts (e.g., base-load units) in ways that integrate with the electrical grid in the United States and internationally.”
