Maryland Senate Has Banned Foam Containers

The Baltimore Sun reported that the use of foam containers and cups have officially been banned by Maryland senators for environmental reasons.

On Mar. 5, senators approved a bill that will begin in July of 2020. If the bill does become a law, Maryland will become the first state to have legislation that will completely ban the use of products such as these.

"The Senate vote of 34-13 came after days of off-and-on debate, with many Republicans raising concerns that the ban would cause difficulty or increased expenses for farmers, small businesses and nonprofit organizations."

The publication goes on to say that many Maryland counties have already adapted the ban locally. Some are seeing positive results such as schools saving money when switching materials. They also hope this ban will reduce the litter that accumulates in the Chesapeake Bay.
